Dar's Wool EmbellishingBuild your sampler by adding layers and embellishments. Once you get going you won’t be able to stop! Supplies needed: Shop wool kit that contains various wools, velvets, cottons plus yarns (includes 1-#18 and #24 Chenille needle). In addition bring matching and contrasting threads of different weights, such as cotton, silk, embroidery thread, Perle or Valdani cotton floss/threads (variegated colors are fun to use), thin and medium weight yarns, narrow ribbons and rick rack - anything that you think would make a good embellishment plus beads, buttons and charms to add. You don’t need large amounts of anything. This is your sampler - feel free to add/change wools or fabrics in your kit to what suit your personality. Your basic sewing kit plus sharp scissors, small appliqué white head pins, roxeann glue or glue stick. My favorite reference book for this class is The Embroidery Stitch Bible by Betty Barnden Homework before class: Grid your background wool with a light chalk outline to 12” x 12”. Now subdivide into 3 rows that are 4” x 4”. Now center your small precut wool squares, leaving center square empty. You can now pin them in place with your appliqué pins, or using small amount of glue or baste in place with thread. Next use a whipstitch (not blanket stitch) with matching thread to stitch your wool pieces to the background fabric. Your thread can be cotton, wool or embroidery floss. I like to use wool thread, but if I don’t have a matching color I will use what I have. At class we will learn many different ways of embellishing each block. Some embroidery stitches that we will be using are the bullion, fly, chain and couching. Thimbleberries 2012Look for more info on the new Thimbleberries project soon!
